Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Return
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
