Ireland started turning out for the team in preseason this season through good friend and current team teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish player then asked additional former professionals, who all play in a midweek small-sided match, to participate.

Former Senegalese forward Oumar Niasse, who scored 12 goals in 65 Premier League matches for the Toffees and still attends their matches at Goodison Park, also made his debut against the opposition - who are based in the city and wear an Blue warm-up gear as their uniform.

"My mate Stephen said 'join and play, it's a laugh'," said the striker.

"Then he told me we were facing a side from the city and the shock I had when I saw them sporting Everton shirts - I thought this is strange for me!

"When you still enjoy the game and you know you can still play, wherever you can play, what are you going to do?

"The fans who come and see are happy and to give someone's moment if they watch us playing there and to ask us questions - it's really about the joy of us getting somewhere we can play, with structure of course."

So great is the squad depth at the club, Niasse had his debut at full-back.

"It's a little unusual but then, I love sprinting and just go inside - I'm not defending that much," he added.

"I warn my centre-back 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to continue attacking.

"The movement is what I'm looking for. It's enjoyable."

Along with the forward's 6 goals on debut, Ireland has scored eight in 3 appearances for the side, while George Boyd scored 5 on his debut match and Lescott, a centre-half by position, notched a triple in one match as a striker.

"It was going round like a rumor they had all these former top-flight stars," remarked the player.

"I felt I was a little starstruck facing Figueroa to be honest.

"Also Emile [Heskey] came on and he's has 60-odd English appearances.

"Our side competed well for a solid twenty minutes but then we had a player dismissed and it was tough.

"We really haven't ceased talking about it - I was phoning my mum and brother on the journey home.

"The opponents were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like playing a group of regular guys.

"Now we are eager for the return fixture."

"We scored 1-0 up and had a
