Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
